French philosopher Blaise Pascal (1623-62) wrote ‘Le coeur a ses raisons que la raison ne connaît pas’-which translates as ‘The heart has its reasons which the mind knows nothing of.’
I think it points to biochemistry beyond conscious awareness and control.
